The alleged shooter in a 2007 murder at a Salt Lake City hair salon has been extradited from Mexico, where he was captured in July, to Utah.
Miguel Mateos-Martinez was taken into custody by Salt Lake City Police officers Tuesday evening, said police Sgt. Robin Snyder.
Mateos-Martinez is suspected of shooting Faviola Hernandez during the August 2007 robbery of her Glendale hair salon.
The brazen incident took place in front of Hernandez's younger siblings, who are now 13 and 8. Mateos-Martinez was charged with aggravated murder, a first-degree felony.
Mateos-Martinez reportedly fled to Mexico days after the shooting, but police said they weren't sure if he has been there since then -- only that he had been living there for at least a couple of months before he was nabbed by U.S. marshals without incident in Ensenada, Mexico.
He was held in a Mexico City prison until Tuesday's extradition. Utah prosecutors agreed to not pursue the death penalty -- a condition the Mexican government placed on his extradition, said prosecutor Patricia Cassell. Prosecutors will instead seek life without parole, Cassell said Thursday.
Jesus A. Jimenez was convicted of murder for the shooting death of the 23-year-old hairdresser and sentenced in September to serve two consecutive prison terms.
The first sentence, for murder, is for 15 years to life. The second, for robbery, is for 6 years to life. Third District Judge Deno Himonas ordered the terms to be served consecutively because Jimenez had shown no remorse and did not cooperate with police to help them find his accomplice or the weapon used to kill Faviola Hernandez.
Jimenez was the getaway driver after Mateos-Martinez allegedly shot Hernandez, according to testimony given by Jimenez's ex-girlfriend, Cassandra Matern, during his trial.
