Cedar City » Following South Summit's 17-6 semifinal win over Grand on Saturday at the Eccles Coliseum, the tears running down the face of Wildcats quarterback Trevor Lewis were as much for the past as the present.
As Lewis took it to the ground and steadily pounded out 139 yards on 17 carries, including a 26-yard touchdown run at the top of the third quarter to put the Wildcats up by just over a touchdown, he wasn't only rushing toward the state title game.
He was working for a chance at redemption.
"My brothers lost the state title to San Juan two times [in 1998 and 2000]," said Lewis. "I just wanted to get back [to the title game]."
After giving up three interceptions and an eight yard run to Grand's Dallen Dalton late in the first half, however, Lewis and the Wildcats had to buckle down in order to overcome the Red Devils' scrappy defense.
"We're a small 2A school, so for most of us, this is it," said Lewis. "Our coach told us this may be the last half of our lives."
Lewis didn't let it go to waste.
He picked up an additional 43 yards in the fourth quarter to set up Porter Hancock's game-clinching 28-yard field goal with less than seven minutes on the clock.
San Juan 40, South Sevier 13 » In the second semifinal, San Juan scooped up two fumbles, picked off two interceptions and scored three touchdowns in the span of less than two minutes to take a four-touchdown halftime lead and cruise to the victory over South Sevier.
Jace Holliday was the Broncos' biggest offensive contributor, rushing for 89 yards and three touchdowns on 17 carries, and adding a 28-yard touchdown reception.
The Rams found a spark late in the third quarter behind Dillon Bishoff's five-yard touchdown reception.
Meanwhile, the first-half efficiency of the Broncos was not there in the second.
But the Broncos already had done enough -- and South Sevier's Andreao Mayo's last minute one-yard touchdown scramble and the Broncos subsequent recovered onside kick were not enough to undo the damage caused by five first-half turnovers.
"Those turnovers just got us going," said Holliday. "We just started to click and it was over."
San Juan and South Summit will meet in the 2A state title game on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Alta High School.
