South Jordan • They immediately hopped over the concrete barrier to watch as close as they possibly could.

A sizable chunk of the Bingham High student section abandoned the view from the bleachers to stand on the west side of the track. Nearly every one whipped out their cell phones, opened social media apps and pressed record to capture the moment that played out exactly how they'd hoped.

They belted out scream after scream in support of Zach Rothey. For all the support lobbed his way before and during the penalty kick shootout, Bingham's sophomore goalkeeper couldn't hear a single word.

"I just focus on the ball in front of me," Rothey said. "That's all that comes in my mind."

With the Miners' stellar 2017 season on the line, the shot-stopper stepped into the spotlight and owned the moment he made his. Rothey made three saves in Tuesday's penalty kick shootout against the Westlake Thunder to help Bingham survive a first-round playoff scare and advance in the Class 5A boys' soccer playoffs.

Bingham coach Ahmed Bakrim, smiling ear-to-ear, summed it up: "That was phenomenal."

Rothey needed to be. Westlake goalkeeper Mason Bartlett made a pair of back-to-back penalty saves to put the Thunder back in the driver's seat. Rothey matched it, and then some. With Westlake threatening to take a lead in the shootout, the sophomore goalie made a diving kick save to keep Bingham knotted with Westlake at 2.

Once Bingham defender Zach Davis buried his penalty attempt, the time came for Rothey to seal it. And he did when he stopped Westlake freshman Fabrice Aitken's penalty kick attempt. The cell phone videos ceased. The student section rushed the hero of the afternoon as Rothey was mobbed.

"He always reads the players," Bakrim said. "His reflexes are unbelievable."

Bingham needed its goalkeeper to keep a dream season alive. The Miners conceded a penalty kick in the final minute of regulation time when Aitken was fouled in the box. Westlake's Harrison Taylor put the equalizer past Rothey. The game-tying penalty negated a spectacular goal by Bingham senior Leo Sobreira, who in the 59th minute, who volleyed in a scissor-kick attempt inside the box.

"You cannot take anything for granted," Bakrim said. "Every game is a last game."

The Miners now march on to face Fremont in the 5A quarterfinal round. As the celebration wore on Tuesday, the Bingham fans, now mostly spilled onto the turf field, chanted Rothey's name. The star of the show took off his gloves and embraced every hug offer that came his way.
