Posted: 9:09 AM- GARDEN CITY - This northern Utah town's council has put the brakes on growth by imposing a partial building moratorium.

The Herald Journal reports today that the council's decision comes in the wake of strong public sentiment in favor of the moratorium.

In August, more than 100 residents packed Garden City's small town hall to successfully oppose a tax hike of nearly 400 percent.

They also called for the building moratorium to allow time to study ways to make sure developers pay their share of city services costs related to development.

The moratorium will last for a maximum of six months and applies only to larger developments. Homes with four bedrooms or fewer can still be approved during the moratorium, as can commercial developments of one unit.

The Herald Journal says projects already approved will be able to continue without delay, as the moratorium only applies to new projects.
