Dear Harriette » I allowed my roommate to borrow my car while I was out of town. Upon my return, everything seemed fine, but when I went to have my car detailed, the cleaners found a used condom under one of the car seats. It's certainly not mine, and I've never allowed anyone else to borrow my car. I want to bring this up to him, but I'm not even sure where to begin. The notion that he may have had sex in my car makes me sick to my stomach.
Scott, Dallas, Texas
Dear Scott » Be direct with your roommate. Tell him that when you had your car detailed, a used condom was discovered. Look him directly in the eye, and make it clear that this is a big deal to you. If he goes silent, continue. Tell him that you consider anyone having sex in your car a violation of basic decency. Ask him what he was thinking. And don't let him borrow your car again -- period.
Dear Harriette » One of the children at my daughter's school has been diagnosed with cancer. My daughter attends a public school, but according to my daughter, her teacher has started having them pray for this child at the beginning of the school day. I personally do not mind, but there are children of other faiths in the class. I want to talk to my daughter's teacher, but I don't want her to think that I'm chastising her. Thoughts?
Jerylann, Provo, Utah
Dear Jerylann » This is a touchy situation for everyone. You are right to be concerned about the formal prayer being offered daily on this student's behalf.
Speak to the administrator and express your concerns. You can recommend that there be a group moment of silence rather than a formal prayer. Public schools are not supposed to be vestiges of religious activity.
Do some research about cancer and how to support a sick child. You may discover more appropriate ideas for schoolmates in this way. Continue to talk to your child to ensure that she feels supported.
