Provo • BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe wasn't joking when he recently said he was working on scheduling football games more than a dozen years away.

BYU and Virginia Tech of the Atlantic Coast Conference announced Friday that they have agreed to a home-and-home football series. The Cougars and Hokies will meet at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va., on Sept. 26, 2026, and at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Sept. 14, 2030.

BYU and Virginia Tech never before have met in football.

"Virginia Tech has consistently been one of the best teams in college football for a very long time," Holmoe said in a school news release. "They are always in the running for the top spot in the ACC because of their high level of talent and great coaching. We are pleased to be able to schedule this series."

Virginia Tech is coached by Justin Fuente, who was the coach of the Memphis Tigers when they defeated BYU 55-48 in two overtimes at the 2014 Miami Beach Bowl. The game ended in a brawl that caused the eventual suspensions of players on both teams for their 2015 openers.

The Hokies have appeared in 24 straight bowl games dating back to 1993 and played in the 2000 BCS National Championship game.

Kickoff times and broadcast plans for the games will be announced at a later time.
