Cedar City • Snow Canyon loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning against Juan Diego but failed to score in their Class 3A baseball second-round playoff game Saturday. That came after the Warriors scored 18 runs in their tournament opener hours earlier.

Snow Canyon junior Zach Nowatzke put to rest any fears of an offensive slumber with one swing of his bat. Nowatzke hit a two-run homer that was part of a three-run fourth inning, and Snow Canyon rode the arm of pitcher Canon Secrist to an 8-1 victory over Juan Diego at the Cedar City High baseball field to complete a two-game sweep that put the Warriors into the quarterfinals.

"Coming in, you never know who you're playing and what's going to happen," Warriors coach Reed Secrist said. "Those two games were good to get and gave me some breathing room so I didn't have to coach too much."

In addition to the missed opportunity in the first inning, Snow Canyon leadoff hitter Jameson Day was picked off first base and Davis Rigby was thrown out at the plate trying to score on an Austin Deming single to deny a run in the third.

Following Braden Baker's leadoff single in the fourth, Nowatzke took a changeup from Soaring Eagle starter Colby Finn and deposited it over the fence in left field. Day added an RBI single with two outs to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.

"I threw my hands to the ball and it felt good off my bat," Nowatzke said. "The pitch was in a good spot."

Day provided additional support for Canon Secrist with a two-run single in a four-run fifth inning and an RBI double in the seventh that finished the scoring.

Secrist allowed Juan Diego its only run in the fifth on an RBI groundout by shortstop Phil Hamel.

Secrist sealed the win with his glove at first base when he made a diving stop on a ball hit by Easton Rex for the final out that left two Soaring Eagle runners in scoring position.

Jed Jensen finished on the mound in relief of Secrist, allowing one hit over the final 22⁄3 innings.

Snow Canyon opened the day with an 18-0 rout over Canyon View at the Falcons' home field, putting away the win early with 10 runs in the sixth inning. —
