The Utah Department of Transportation is warning drivers to expect delays and heavy traffic congestion this weekend on Interstate 215 in western Salt Lake County because of lane narrowing and a ramp closure for construction there.

The freeway will be reduced to two lanes in each direction beginning 7 p.m. Friday until Monday morning between 4700 South and State Road 201.

That will allow crews to shift traffic into new configurations for ongoing construction there. It will allow crews to begin reconstruction of northbound lanes in that section.

Also, a long-term closure of the ramp from eastbound S.R. 201 to northbound I-215 is scheduled to begin Sunday night for up to 90 days.

Because of expected congestion, UDOT recommends that drivers going to Maverik Center events avoid I-215 and use such alternate routes as I-15 and Redwood Road.

UDOT also reminds drivers that the speed limit through the construction zone on I-215 is now 60 mph.

Construction schedules may change depending on the weather. Updated traffic information is available online at udottraffic.utah.gov or on UDOT's traffic app.
