A 73-year-old semitrailer driver died Wednesday when his truck rolled on State Route 56 in southern Utah, authorities said.

The Utah Highway Patrol said Beryl resident Morris W. Carter was driving west on State Route 56 near mile marker 20 — about 40 miles west of Cedar City — when the crash occurred at about 2:45 p.m. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Carter drifted to the right side of the roadway, then corrected back off the left side. He then overcorrected toward the road surface, "but the weight of the load and truck shifted, causing it to tip over and roll onto its side," according to UHP.

Officials said the cab sustained major damage when the truck rolled.

Carter suffered "significant trauma" and died at the scene.
