West Jordan • Sophomore Jonathan Castro's first goal of the season erased a rough final 13 minutes in regulation and saved the day for Copper Hills.

Castro scored four minutes into overtime to give the Grizzlies a 4-3 Region 3 victory against visiting Brighton on a cold and blustery afternoon Friday.

"Adrenaline is rushing in overtime, and whoever makes a mistake first loses," Castro said. "I saw the keeper was a little bit too much to his left side, so I just thought, 'Why not have a hit?'"

Copper Hills (7-4-1, 6-2) twice held two-goal leads in regulation, on two first-half goals from Ben Gonzalez and a 35-yard rocket from Aaron Nixon in the 56th minute that made it 3-1.

But Brighton responded with a Jake Babcock goal in the 67th minute and the equalizer on David Brog's eighth goal of the season just eight minutes later.

"They always say 2-0 is a dangerous score," Copper Hills coach Eddie Moura said. "Same goes for 3-1. You tend to not have the same energy you have before. It's something we have to work on. We showed a lot of heart to come back after they made it 3-3."

The victory completed a regular-season sweep of the Bengals (9-3, 6-3) and put Copper Hills in control the No. 2 seed in the region with four matches remaining. Bingham leads the region and already has beaten Copper Hills twice.

Jackson Paul scored on a penalty kick in the first half for Brighton, which had won four in a row entering Friday.

Castro scored twice as a freshman, and Moura said the midfielder showed signs at Thursday's practice that he was ready to find the net.

"I told him, 'Jonny, today's your day. Today's the day you're going to score,'" Moura said. "I had a lot of confidence in him and he was ready to go today." —
