Commerce City • Filling in for suspended goalkeeper Tim Howard, Zach MacMath appeared to be five minutes away from posting his second shutout of the season Saturday night.

Then, Real Salt Lake ended with a flourish.

Rapids center back Jared Watts was called for a handball in the penalty area and sent off with a red card in the 85th minute and Real Salt Lake striker Yura Movsisyan put away the corner kick, tying the game at 1.

Four minutes later, RSL forward Brooks Lennon took advantage of a flat-footed back four and slotted home the game-winner for an improbable 2-1 victory for the visitors.

Kevin Doyle scored his second goal in a week, but the loss snapped Colorado's 19-game home unbeaten streak. Colorado's last loss at home was in October 2015.

"It's tough to take," said Doyle. "You lead for so long in a game, we played well for long spells, and we were probably a bit nervous in the lead, or a bit protective of our one-nil lead. We fell asleep for the last five, 10 minutes of the game, which is not like us. It's tough to take."

In the first round of the Rocky Mountain Cup, the game was full of the chippy, physical altercations that have long distinguished this rivalry.

Rapids midfielder Dominique Badji got the worst of one late in the first half when RSL defender Chris Wingert gave him a cynical shove at the end line after Badji made a long run and a cross on the left wing. Badji fell and slid into a barrier five yards away, slamming his head hard. The speedy winger was down for a while but was able to return.

The Rapids scored a beautiful goal in the 29th minute on a play Doyle finished. Moments after midfielder Nana Boateng was hurt by RSL midfielder Luke Mulholland, an ailing Boateng found streaking winger Marlon Hairston with a beautiful ball on the left wing. Hairston ran it down and crossed it to Doyle, who scored on one of the diving headers that have become his favorite weapon.

The Rapids dominated possession and seemed to have the game in hand — until RSL rallied for its second straight victory since Mike Petke took over as coach.

"It's a bitter pill," Doyle said. "We all feel like we should have won that tonight."
