Kaysville • To Davis sophomore Paige Elkins, her best hit of the day was perhaps her softest one.

A bloop single to shallow left-center drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning, as the Darts beat Bingham 10-5 after rallying from a 5-1 deficit on Tuesday in a nonregion contest.

"I think all the hits we had were building up to that particular moment," Elkins said. "I think that last hit, it just pulled through. It feels fine as long as it helps my teammates out."

The inning before, Elkins doubled to the left field fence to score a run as Davis (10-2) drew within 5-4 before scoring six more runs in the sixth inning.

"She's a good hitter. She can hit to all fields and does a good job," Davis coach Mylei Zachman said.

The two hitters named Paige at the top of the Davis lineup, senior Paige Reynolds and Elkins, turned out to be the key batters for the Darts.

But early in the game, Bingham (9-6) was the team going strong on offense. The Miners scored in the first inning helped in part by two Davis errors. Sierra Brown then homered to start the second inning for Bingham, which added three more runs for a 5-1 lead, the final two scoring on a double by Karly Wightman.

In the final five innings of the game, though, Bingham's offense was silenced by Davis pitcher Mia Cullimore, who allowed only two hits after the second inning.

"We need to learn to make adjustments in the box," Bingham coach Mikki Jackson said. "They made adjustments as to what was being pitched at us; we didn't make adjustments as to what was being thrown."

Davis started its comeback in the fifth inning, then started the sixth with three infield hits by Emily Kunzler, Rachel Stott and Sydney Eyre to load the bases.

Reynolds then poked an opposite-field hit to left to tie the game at 5 before Elkins' single pushed Davis ahead. Two-run singles by Cullimore and Abbie O'Brien ultimately finished off the Miners.

"I think the last few years, we've been moving up trying to get better. We like to play teams like Bingham who have been among the elite softball teams in Utah," Zachman said. "We like to see if we measure up with them." —
