Based on reports from doctors and psychologists, prosecutors have filed additional child abuse charges against a Utah mother accused of leaving her severely malnourished son locked in a filthy bathroom for a year.

Brandy K. Jaynes, 36, of Toquerville, was originally charged in 5th District Court with one count of second-degree felony child abuse after her 12-year-old son was found locked in a feces-covered bathroom weighing 30 pounds.

In charges amended earlier this month, Jaynes faces two additional counts of second-degree felony child abuse. One count is related to serious physical injury resulting "in severe emotional harm, severe developmental delay or intellectual disability, or severe impairment of the child's ability to function." The other alleges serious physical injury that "creates a permanent disfigurement or protracted loss or impairment of the function of a bodily member, limb or organ."

Language added to the original count now alleges Jaynes inflicted serious physical injury "that results in starvation or failure to thrive or malnutrition that jeopardizes the child's life."

The boy's father, 40-year-old Russell Orin Jaynes, who brought the boy to the hospital Jan. 8, has been charged with one count of third-degree felony child abuse.

According to prosecutors, his charges are based on failure to intervene sooner regarding his son's care and his failure to get prompt medical attention after he found the boy locked in the bathroom.

Brandy Jaynes' defense attorney, Edward Flint, has said his client was overwhelmed by a child with "severe special needs."

The state took custody of the boy after he was admitted to the hospital. He is believed to have been held in the filthy bathroom for at least a year, court documents state. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30 pounds is about the average weight of a 2-year-old.

Court records do not reflect any amended charges filed against Russell Jaynes as of Tuesday. A scheduling conference in his case is set for April 17.

Brandy Jaynes appeared in court Monday via video conference, court records show. Flint objected to prosecutors filing the amended charges without a motion, and the court granted the defense 10 days to file an objection.

Despite protest from prosecutors, the original date for a preliminary hearing — March 27 — was vacated, and no new dates were immediately set.

Brandy Jaynes is being held at the Washington County jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.
