Oklahoma City • Russell Westbrook needed only until the opening minutes of the third quarter to make history.

When the Oklahoma City Thunder guard corralled his 10th rebound early in the second half, he moved past Wilt Chamberlain for the second most triple-doubles ever by an NBA player in one season.

"If anyone could do it, I knew it was going to be him," Thunder guard Victor Oladipo said. "… It doesn't surprise any of us in this locker room, but it's still historic. It's unbelievable."

Westbrook now has 32 triple-doubles on the season. He would need 10 more in his final 16 games to pass Oscar Robertson for most ever in a season.

"It's amazing what he has done," Thunder coach Billy Donovan said. "… They are historic numbers that you are talking about, Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson, two of the greatest players to play the game. They are impactful in the game. And I think that when Russell's career is done, whenever that time is, he is a guy that you are going to look at and say that what he has done throughout his career is historic."

The Thunder are now 26-6 on the year when Westbrook records a triple-double and 11-23 when he does not.

On Saturday, the stat line read 33 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds for Westbrook, who has torched the Jazz on more than one occasion this season.

Even so, Jazz coach Quin Snyder finds himself admiring the point guard's game.

"These are the types of games we'll step back and say, 'Hey man, remember when Russell Westbrook did that to us?' " Snyder said. "You just hope you don't have to say it too many times."

Courtside chat

Joe Ingles is always quick with a one-liner.

Last week, when New Orleans' E'Twaun Moore tried to put a hand on the Jazzman late in the fourth quarter, Ingles quickly and comically swiped it away. Then he did it again, and again, and again, until Moore and Pelicans big man DeMarcus Cousins came over to share a few words.

"We were just talking. We have the same agent, so we just had a chat about our agent," Ingles deadpanned after the game.

Voting opens

The Utah Sports Commission will honor former Jazz coach Jerry Sloan with a lifetime achievement award next month.

But the Hall of Famer might not be the only Jazzman on the program.

Center Rudy Gobert and Joel Bolomboy have been nominated for the 2017 Governor's State of Sport Awards for the top male pro or Olympian and top male collegiate athlete, respectively.

Voting takes place online at stateofsportawards.com through April 9.
