Ogden • Bingham junior Brayden Cosper took off from the top of the key and headed for the bucket, knowing the pass would come his way.

How?

The way all good receivers know.

"I thought for sure. No, I knew — I saw it in his eyes," Cosper said. "He's a great player and we're best friends, so he knows when to give it to me."

Miners 6-foot-11 senior center Branden Carlson won't be confused with Bingham's 6-foot quarterback Matt Degn anytime soon, but he served the same function that Degn did in the fall: Both got Cosper the ball in a state championship game, and Cosper delivered.

And Lone Peak was the victim both times.

In the Class 5A football title game in November, Cosper caught a momentum-changing touchdown pass before halftime in the Miners' 17-10 victory.

With Bingham down 36-32 in Saturday's 5A boys' basketball title game, Cosper flashed to the hoop and got the assist both times from Carlson as he made a pair of buckets to tie the game. He then hit a pair of free throws to give the Miners the lead with 1 minute, 37 seconds left on the way to a 49-42 victory.

"Being able to put Cosper in — and Cosper didn't play much last night [vs. Pleasant Grove in the semifinals] because of foul trouble — just that he made the plays he did, it's just huge for us," Bingham coach Jake Schroeder said.

Cosper wasn't the only Miners wide receiver in the fall to grab glory on the hardwood. Dax Milne, like Cosper an important playmaker in the 5A football title game, started in Saturday's finale.

"You know, guys dream about winning two state championships in a year," Milne said. "Me and Cosper, we're able to come together as a team in basketball and football, and get it."

Milne didn't score but said it didn't bother him.

"I'm used to it. That's not my game," Milne said. "My game is good defense."

"I think he's one of the best defenders on our team, and the Bingham team is a pretty good defensive team," Schroeder said.

Lone Peak will be in the same region as Bingham next season, but that wasn't a major concern for Cosper while his team was cutting down the net.

"Hey, we're going to take out whoever they put against us in the championship game, and we've just happened to beat them twice," Cosper said.
