West Jordan coach Scott Briggs didn't believe his program was an underdog against Sky View, the top-seeded team from Region 1, in the first round of the Class 5A boys' basketball tournament Monday at the University of Utah.

Neither did his players.

The Jaguars (12-11), the final qualifier from Region 3, were ahead by as many as 16 points and led virtually wire-to-wire in a 69-63 decision to advance to face Pleasant Grove at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Weber State University.

"I know everyone else thought it was an upset — and I think they are a really good team. There is no question," Briggs said. "You don't get a record like that without being really well-coached and really good, but our mentality was we were coming up here to win. We weren't looking at it like an upset. We expected to win. I'm proud of our guys."

Darrian Nebeker finished with a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, including five offensive boards. West Jordan outrebounded the Bobcats 36-26 and doubled-up on the offensive glass, 14-17. That led to a 32-22 point advantage in the paint and a staggering 21-7 advantage in second-chance points.

"We lost in the first round last year, and we wanted to get it back this year," Nebeker said. "We were really pumped up. We thought we could beat these guys."

Collin Larson added 14 points, five assists and five steals and Connor Manglinong chipped in 12 points in the win.

Peyton Falslev led all scorers with 23 points, while Mason Falslev finished with 19 points and Luke White added 12 points in the loss for Sky View (19-3).

The Jaguars, which gained confidence in close losses against title contenders Bingham and Copper Hills, built a commanding 22-8 lead after the first eight minutes.

"I don't think they were nervous about the moment," Briggs said. "I truly don't think they came up here hoping to win. I think deep down they believed they were going to do it."
