Taylorsville • As Skyline made pass after pass, Judge Memorial's Vanessa Austin sat under the scorer's table and watched, awaiting the chance to check back in.

By the time she did, it was too late. Skyline's "spread" offense — a four corners-like approach to milk clock and limit possessions — turned Judge's top offensive weapon into a spectator for nearly three minutes.

The Eagles capitalized on Austin's absence and held on for a 60-57 victory in the Class 4A girls' basketball state championship game Saturday afternoon.

Skyline sophomore Kiana Eskelson scored with 1 minutes, 4 seconds left in overtime, and Skyline found a way to hold on after it saw Judge repeatedly claw back from deficits the entire game.

"It's just unbelievable," tournament MVP Hannah Anderl said. "We've been here three of my four years, and to finally come here and win it all is such a great feeling for me."

Barrett Jessop scored 20 points and Madison Grange added 16 as Skyline (23-4) avenged a late-season loss at Judge and won its fourth state title and first since 2008.

Keeping Austin on the sideline for three quarters of the overtime period certainly helped. Austin, who picked up her fourth foul with 7:12 left in the fourth quarter, scored 18 of her game-high 22 points after halftime.

The senior chewed up Skyline's interior defense after Eagles center Cameron Mooney fouled out late in the third quarter.

"He didn't start Vanessa," Skyline coach Lynette Schroeder said about Judge coach Paul Shiramizu, who subbed Austin in and out of the game the entire fourth quarter to avoid her fifth foul. "And we wanted to limit her ability to come in in overtime. Our big had fouled out, and we definitely didn't have that size advantage inside."

Anderl scored 10 of her 12 points in the first quarter, and Jessop had 14 in the second quarter as Skyline built a 38-25 halftime lead.

But Judge showed why it was one of the last two teams standing, with gritty defense and a powerful inside game. The Bulldogs (19-5) used a 13-2 run to close to within four points late in the third quarter, then took the lead on Mayree Ellis' basket with 1:30 to play.

"They're a tough team, no doubt," Grange said. "We split with them this season in region, and we knew it was time to get back at them."

Judge's Miyalla Tarver hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds left to tie the game, and Judge had a chance to win in regulation but turned the ball over. —
