Draper • A little self-generated bulletin board material did the trick Tuesday night for Timpview.

Chaz Ah You's tongue-in-cheek comment Monday in practice about how few plays the Thunderbirds run was the inspiration behind a 75-69 victory at Corner Canyon, securing a playoff berth for Timpview.

"Chaz said, 'Hey, for a team that doesn't run many plays, we sure have a whole lot of them,' " Timpview coach Kevin Santiago said. "I wrote that quote up on the board, and then I think I called five plays tonight."

The result was a defense-optional, end-to-end game that saw Timpview bury 14 3-pointers and let point guard Adam Santiago create off dribble penetration.

Hunter Erickson scored a game-high 21 points, and Adam Santiago and Nate Hanson each added 16 as the Thunderbirds (16-5, 10-2) kept their hopes of a Region 7 championship alive.

"It's a lot of fun," Erickson said. "Coach puts a lot of trust in us to go out there and play the way we play."

John Mitchell had 17 points and Blake Emery scored 11 of his career-high 16 points in the fourth quarter as Corner Canyon kept pace, but wasn't able to take a lead in the second half.

Timpview used a 9-0 run early in the third quarter to take a 53-43 lead, but the host Chargers (13-7, 6-6) rallied back behind Emery. The junior's 3-pointer with 1:01 to play cut the deficit to 71-69, but a pair of Santiago free throws and a Santiago steal and emphatic Erickson dunk ended the evening.

"We really focused on our rotations on defense," Erickson said. "Help your teammates out. … We were really good at it."

Jordan Sagers scored 15 points — all on 3-pointers — for Timpview, which is chasing Timpanogos for the region crown.

Corner Canyon is one of five teams vying for the final two playoff spots in the region, with two games to play. —
