Northern Utah will have a wet Monday morning, with rain falling in the valleys and snow falling in the mountains, the National Weather Service predicts.

Later in the day, snow will hit the valley floors and might impact the evening commute, the weather service says.

In addition, rain falling on snow in the morning and afternoon could cause rivers to run high. Nuisance flooding also is possible, particularly in flood-prone areas of Cache County and the Weber Basin, according to the weather service.

The Box Elder School District canceled school Monday.

Monday will be breezy in northern Utah and more precipitation is expected in the evening, with a chance of snow after midnight.

The highs are expected to reach the 40s and the lows should drop to the 20s and 30s, the weather service says.

The Utah Avalanche Center says the danger of snowslides is expected to rise to high or extreme in the northern part of the Beehive State and part of Idaho. A backcounty avalanche warning has been continued to 6 p.m. Wednesday in an area that includes the Wasatch Range, the Bear River Range and the mountains of southeast Idaho, the western Uintas and the Manti-Skyline Plateau.

"Avoid being on or beneath steep slopes," a warning from the center says. "Avalanches releasing off steep roofs may be dangerous in the urban and mountain valleys."

Periods of snow will continue over the northern Utah mountains for much of the work week, while the valleys will get periodic rain and snow, according to the weather service.
