A major winter storm slammed into the Wasatch Front early Christmas Day, delivering Utah its snowiest holiday in 100 years.

National Weather Service data recorded a snowfall of 8.1 inches near the Salt Lake City International Airport, almost an inch shy of the record 9-inch accumulation seen in 1916.

Snow totals in Salt Lake County communities ranged from 5 to 10 inches, with the latter piling up in Sandy, Cottonwood Heights and Salt Lake City's Sugar House neighborhood. Tooele reported 12 inches of snow and Bountiful recorded 13 inches, according to NWS data released Sunday evening.

In the Cache Valley, snow totals measured from roughly 9 inches to a foot.

Utah ski resorts received the biggest of Mother Nature's snowy gift, with as much as two feet of fresh powder falling at some resorts. Brian Head reported 36 inches of new snow, Deer Valley 20 inches, Brighton 19 inches and Park City Mountain Resort 12 inches.

Slushy and slippery roads caused a number of slide-offs on area roads and one fatal accident Sunday afternoon.

A Stansbury man was killed in a three-car accident on SR-201 west of Magna about 3 p.m., after he lost control of his car and slid into oncoming traffic, the Utah Highway Patrol said.

Christopher Wilson, 50, was headed eastbound when his car crossed into westbound lanes and struck another vehicle. The collision caused Wilson's car to spin into the path of a third car, the UHP said. A fourth car also hit Wilson, but it left the scene, investigators said.

Wilson, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, the UHP said. A male passenger in his car was also injured and taken to a local hospital. No one in the other two cars was injured.

Despite a tapering off of the storm Sunday afternoon, forecasters predicted a 50 percent chance of snow continuing Sunday evening, with lows near 20.

Monday should be partly cloudy in the morning, then clearing, with highs hitting the upper 20s.
