Crews battled a growing brush fire on the shore of Utah Lake on Thursday night.

Firefighters responded about 6 p.m. to the blaze, burning between the lake and Orem, said Utah County Fire Capt. Andrew Siebach. The fire covered about 30 acres as of 10 p.m.

The north side of the fire was hemmed in by the water, but the flames expanded to the south, burning in the tall and dry phragmites — an invasive grass that grows around the shoreline. Winds pushed back the flames Thursday, Siebach said, aiding efforts to contain it.

"We're hoping, as the night goes on, it dies out," Siebach said.

No structures were threatened, though the marshy terrain was difficult for nine crew members to access. The cause was under investigation.
