A toddler has died after being hit by car in West Valley City on Tuesday evening, police said.

The incident occurred near 2700 South and 2900 West about 5 p.m., said West Valley City police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku, when a woman was backing out of a driveway and did not see 19-month-old Grayson Gravin; her car struck the toddler in the street.

Grayson's mother had left the child in the car as she went to open the door and take groceries inside the house, Vainuku said, and as she opened the door, the family's dog got out. While the mother was trying to get the dog, Grayson unbuckled himself, exited the car and walked into the street. The woman who hit him was backing out of a driveway across the street.

An ambulance took Grayson to the hospital, where a medical helicopter was supposed to meet him, Vainuku said, but he died at the hospital before the helicopter arrived.

The incident is under investigation, police say.
