A fire in a junkyard briefly billowed dark plumes of smoke into the skies above West Valley City early Monday afternoon.

Public safety dispatchers reported the blaze at 12:10 p.m. near 2400 South and 5600 West. No injuries were reported.

The site contains numerous wrecked cars and other vehicles, but specifics about what damages occurred were not immediately available.

The heavy smoke, which had cleared by 12:35 p.m. as the flames were doused, closed down the southbound lanes of 5600 West at 3100 South for about an hour.

The cause of the fire was undetermined, but under investigation.
