Cleveland • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it will dredge a Cleveland shipping channel where cargo ships have been forced to lighten loads because of accumulated sediment.
The Plain Dealer reports (http://bit.ly/2dG8X2c ) the Army Corps also announced Monday it will place dredged sediment in a confined facility along the Lake Erie shoreline.
The Corps and state of Ohio have been engaged in a yearlong court fight about where the sediment can be disposed. The Corps maintains the sediment isn't toxic and can be dumped in the lake. State regulators argue the sediment is polluted with PCBs, considered a probable carcinogen.
The Corps says it wants to the state to pay additional disposal costs if it prevails in the lawsuit. A federal judge must approve the Corps' plan.
