A 20-year-old man has been charged with killing another man during a drug-related robbery at a Salt Lake City apartment earlier this month.

Landon Kavani Johnson, 20, of Salt Lake City, was charged Friday in 3rd District Court with first-degree felony murder for allegedly fatally shooting 18-year-old Eric Padilla on Sept 17.

Johnson also was charged with first-degree felony counts of aggravated burglary and aggravated robbery, as well as second-degree felony obstructing justice.

Charges state that Johnson knocked on the door of a unit at the Sky Harbor Apartments, 221 N. Sun Arbor Terrace (1850 West), at about 9 p.m. on Sept. 17.

Padilla and two other males were playing video games in a bedroom, and one of the males opened the front door to a man wearing a bandanna over his face who was carrying a large duffel bag and holding a large silver revolver, charges said.

The masked man said, "Give me everything you got," and the two went to the bedroom, where the man saw Padilla sitting on the floor and shot him in the head, charges state.

The man again demanded "everything," and was given a large Mason jar and a package, both containing marijuana, charges state.

The man also grabbed $500 from the bedroom.

He placed all the items in the duffel bag, then left the apartment, wiping down the doorknobs with the sleeve of his sweater as he went.

One of the surviving occupants later told police that the robber's bandanna kept falling off his face and that he recognized him as "Landon," charges state. The other occupant told police the duffel carried by the robber was dark with a logo, possibly a Nike bag, and that the bandanna was dark or navy blue.

When officers spoke to Johnson, he admitted being at the apartment complex to play basketball, but denied entering any apartments, charges state.

Johnson also said that in the past, he had been to the apartment in question with a friend, who bought marijuana, charges state.

During a search of Johnson's bedroom, police found a black bandanna and a black Nike bag. Inside the bag was a Mason jar containing a vacuum sealed bag of marijuana, charges state.

No court dates were immediately set. Johnson was being held at the Salt Lake County Jail in lieu of $100,000 cash-only bail.
