Dignitaries including Gov. Gary Herbert and Mayor Kelvyn Cullimore attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday for Cottonwood Heights sparkling new city hall.

Construction of the 35,000-square foot building at 3377 E. Bengal Blvd. took just over 2½ years since plans were announced at a cost of $16.5 million.

Occupying grounds that cover 4.77 acres, the facility houses 20 offices, six meeting rooms, a large multi-purpose room and separate wings for administration and police. City staffers recently moved into the new building.

Layton Construction was selected for the project, which began with site clearing in November 2014. The building was designed by GSBS Architects.

The city noted the governor's connection to Cottonwood Heights: He signed the articles of incorporation in 2005 while serving as lieutenant governor. He also presided over the first inaugural ceremonies and officiated in the first city council oaths of office the same year.
