A West Jordan police officer was injured when an SUV plowed into his cruiser early Thursday, just moments after an attempted carjacking suspect was found hiding under a car was forcibly subdued.

Public safety dispatchers reported that the SUV struck the officer's vehicle about 1:20 a.m. The officer was standing near the cruiser and was knocked down, suffering a concussion, but he was reported to be in good condition late Thursday morning.

The male driver of the SUV was taken to the hospital, where he later was listed in fair condition, WJPD Sgt. Joe Monson said.

WJPD had responded to 8630 S. Redwood Road after receiving reports of a man attempting to break into and allegedly carjack at least two vehicles. When they arrived, officers located the man underneath a car, but he refused to surrender.

When the bloodied, 21-year-old man exhibited unspecified aggressive behavior, he was shocked with a Taser and subdued.

It turned out the suspect had been injured himself, apparently when being hit by yet another vehicle prior to the arrival of police.

Monson said the suspect was in serious condition, having suffered several broken bones, but he was expected to recover.

WJPD was looking for the hit-and-run vehicle — believed to be dark or black in color — as part of a possible hit-and-run case.
