New York • Stocks indexes closed higher on Wall Street, led by gains in energy companies after a big acquisition was announced in the sector.

Spectra Energy jumped 13 percent Tuesday after agreeing to be acquired by the Canadian company Enbridge for about $28 billion.

Other energy companies also rose as investors hoped more consolidation would follow.

Navistar soared 41 percent after a unit of Volkswagen bought a stake in the truck and engine maker.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 46 points, or 0.3 percent, to 18,538.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged up 6 points, or 0.3 percent, to 2,186. The Nasdaq composite rose 26 points, or 0.5 percent, to 5,275, notching another all-time high.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.54 percent.
