A 30-year-old man was fatally shot Sunday morning in Salt Lake City after he tried to rob another man of drugs, police said, and the man allegedly targeted in the robbery has been arrested.

The slaying victim has been identified as Jesse Ray Rakes, who was found at about 7:30 a.m. lying on a sidewalk at 550 W. 300 South near the Salt Lake City Intermodal Hub. His car had rolled and was resting on its roof nearby, according to police.

Rakes was transported to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Another man in the flipped car suffered an arm injury.

Witnesses told investigators there apparently had been some type of collision between Rakes' vehicle and another vehicle. It not yet known if Rakes was shot before or after the rollover.

The other vehicle involved was later located at 500 W. 320 South, according to police.

Rakes and two other men — Michael Polk, 34, and Matthew Eyre, 35 — were trying to rob Daniel Simon when the shooting occurred, police said.

Simon, 25, was booked in Salt Lake County jail on possession of a firearm by a restricted person. Police said the case will be screened for a possible homicide charge.

Polk and Eyre were booked for aggravated robbery, and a woman with Simon, 25-year-old Natanni Xoumphonphackdy, was booked for obstruction, police said.
