The City of Tooele is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone with information leading to an arrest in a suspected July arson fire that destroyed seven homes and damaged dozens of others.

Tooele Police Chief Ron Kirby's announcement came some six weeks after the fire, believed to have been deliberately set in a field of grass, spread into an adjacent mobile home community.

Kirby said that detectives initially received numerous tips about the fire, but none had identified the person or persons responsible for the July 19 blaze near 700 South and Coleman Street.

Few new leads have been generated over the past couple weeks, the chief indicated.

"We hope that this [reward] is incentive for someone who may have been holding on to information to come forward and share what they know," Kirby said on Thursday.

Police initially questioned a 24-year-old man believed to have been in the area on the night of the fire, but he was later released without being charged.

Tooele police earlier confirmed they were cooperating with the Utah State Fire Marshal's Office in an arson investigation, but they have declined to detail what evidence led them to conclude the fire was intentionally set.

Anyone with information is asked to call Tooele City Police at 435-882-5600 or text TOOELETIP7101 plus a message to 274637.
