TV is being overrun with time travel.

"Legends of Tomorrow," "Doctor Who," "The Flash," "Outlander" and "12 Monkeys" will all be back. And they'll be joined this fall by two new time-travel shows — The CW's "Frequency" and NBC's "Timeless. " Three more, ABC's "Time After Time," Fox's "Making History" and Netflix's "Travelers," will debut later in the season.

"There seems to be a huge appetite for it," said NBC Entertainment president Jennifer Salke, who ordered "Timeless" and could have ordered more. "We have heard SO many pitches on time travel."

There have not, however, been a huge number of time-travel TV hits. Shows like "Alcatraz," "New Amsterdam" and "Terra Nova" came and went quickly.

But others have been more successful, creatively and commercially. The 10 best time-travel shows are:

1. "Star Trek" (1966-2005)

There have been 60 "Trek" episodes centered on time travel spread over the original series (four), the animated series (one), "Next Generation" (12), "Deep Space Nine" (13), "Voyager" (16) and "Enterprise" (14). Heck, the entire third season of "Enterprise" — all 24 episodes — revolved around time-travel.

That doesn't include episodes in which someone appeared out of the past or future; that featured holodeck storylines; that featured flashes of the past or future; or with just a bit of time travel. (Like "TOS" episode "Naked Time," in which the Enterprise traveled back a couple of days in the closing moments.)

You could add 30-plus episodes if you included those.

The list does include some of the best "Star Trek" episodes of all time, including "City on the Edge of Forever" ("TOS"), "Yesterday's Enterprise" and "All Good Things" ("TNG"), "Little Green Men" ("DS9"), "Year of Hell" ("Voyager") and "Storm Front" ("Enterprise").

2. "Quantum Leap" (1989-93)

A failed time experiment sends a scientist bouncing from year to year, leaping into the bodies of different people as he tries to figure out a way to get home.

3. "The Flash" (2014-present)

It isn't all about time travel, but that has been a key element in this superhero series — the best of the genre currently on TV.

4. "Doctor Who" (1963-1989; 2005-present)

The title character is a Time Lord — 'nuff said.

5. "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" (1959-60; 2015)

This animated, supersmart dog, his adopted boy and their Wayback Machine were at their best in segments of "The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show."

6. "12 Monkeys" (2015-present)

Based on the 1995 movie, a traveler from the year 2043 goes back in time to prevent a plague that kills almost everyone.

7. "Dark Shadows" (1966-71 daytime; 1991 primetime)

Characters in this Gothic soap opera traveled from the 1960s and 1970s to the 18th and 19th centuries.

8. "Life On Mars" (2006-2007)

This British series revolved around a police detective who wakes up in the 1970s. Not to be confused with the inferior American reboot.

9. "Outlander" (2014-present)

A WWII nurse is flung back to 1743 Scotland, where she falls in love with a Highland warrior.

10. "The Time Tunnel" (1966-67)

Two scientists travel through time as part of a secret government project in this cheesy-but-groundbreaking series.
