The pilot of a paraglider was killed Sunday morning after he crashed through the roof of a Draper church.

The 57-year-old man, identified as Jim H. Petersen of Bluffdale, was apparently flying the powered glider at 8:55 a.m. when he spun out of control, fell through the roof and landed in an attic space of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel at 272 E. Traverse Loop Drive near 14700 South, according to Sgt. Chad Carpenter of the Unified Police Department.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said that the glider's chute partially collapsed, which caused the glider to spiral to the ground.

The building was occupied at the time, but no other injuries were reported, Carpenter said. All church events for the day were immediately canceled.
