A former photography teacher at Cyprus High School has entered a plea in abeyance to resolve charges that he was watching pornography in his classroom.

Douglas M. Lind, 55, was charged in April in 3rd District Court with one count of accessing pornographic or indecent material on school property, a class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail.

On Friday, Lind pleaded no contest to the charge.

The plea will be held in abeyance for one year, at which time the case will be dismissed so long a Lind stays out of trouble and pays a $200 fee for the services of a public defense attorney, according to court documents.

Charges state that on Jan. 20, a school counselor stopped by Lind's classroom to talk to him and found the door was locked.

When Lind noticed him and opened the door, the counselor said he heard "inappropriate noises" coming from the area of Lind's desk, according to charging documents. Lind walked over to his desk and silenced the noise, the counselor told police.

Lind was immediately placed on administrative leave, according to Granite School District spokesman Ben Horsley, and he resigned on March 25..

Meanwhile, a Granite School District police detective made arrangements to have Lind's cell phone and a micro SD memory card taken to a forensic computer lab, where they began to extract data, charges state.

At some point, Lind admitted to police that he had downloaded pornographic images from a website onto his cell phone and SD card, charges state.

Horsley has said that Lind, who had been with the high school for 21 years, had been the audio-visual specialist. Most recently, Lind had been teaching photography, Horsley said.
