An explosion in a utility task vehicle, similar to an ATV, injured three people and sparked a fire Sunday afternoon in American Fork Canyon, according to a tweet by the Lone Peak Fire District.

One of the injured was taken to the burn center at the University of Utah Hospital in serious condition, the fire district tweeted.

The blaze, called the Major Evans Fire, covered 10 acres of steep rocky terrain by early evening. Three fire engines and a helicopter were sent to the scene.

A tweet from the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest said the fire is at the junction of Major Evans Gulch and North Fork. People camping north and east of Tibble Fork in the proximity of the fire were asked to leave.

The Tribune will update this story when more information becomes available.
