Utah highway officials say drivers should plan ahead for a few expected delays on highways this long July Fourth weekend to ensure they don't end up celebrating in long traffic jams.

The Utah Department of Transportation says highway delays are expected as extra people leave town on Friday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., and as a higher-than-usual number of vacationers return home on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

UDOT also warns that the large Stadium of Fire show at Brigham Young University's LaVell Edwards Stadium on Saturday could lead to delays on Interstate 15 and major highways in Provo and Orem between 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

As alternates to the University Parkway exit toward BYU, UDOT recommends using the Orem 800 North, Orem Center Street or Provo Center Street exits.

UDOT says construction work on major projects will be suspended over the weekend, but many lane restrictions will remain in place to protect work zones. Areas where that may create delays amid holiday traffic include:

• I-15 between Bangerter Highway and 12300 South: Lanes are shifted and speeds are reduced to 55 miles per hour in active construction zones. Crews are widening the freeway and placing new pavement from Lehi to Draper.

• Interstate 215 from 4700 South to State Road 201. All lanes remain open, but traffic is shifted and lanes have been narrowed. The speed limit has been reduced to 60 mph, and an eastbound ramp to S.R. 201 from southbound I-215 is closed. Crews are reconstructing the freeway and adding auxiliary lanes.

• I-15 from Farr West tov Brigham City. All lanes remain open, but lanes are narrowed and the speed limit has been reduced to 65 mph. Crews are widening the freeway.

Meanwhile on Monday, the Utah Transit Authority will operate buses, TRAX, the S-Line and FrontRunner on Saturday schedules — but will offer no bus service that day to Park City.

UTA will provide late trips on Monday to the end of lines on TRAX and the S-Line to help riders get home from fireworks in Sandy, Sugar House and downtown Salt Lake City. The full schedules are available online at rideuta.com/news.

UTA also will offer limited late service on Friday after the Real Salt Lake game and fireworks show at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy.
