Ed Eyestone's calling it a "working vacation."

The BYU track & field head coach is taking his family to Eugene, Ore., this week — both to get away from the searing summer heat along the Wasatch Front, but also to coach two of his 2016 All-American runners at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials.

Each coming off a spectacular track & field season, BYU juniors and middle-distance stars Shaquille Walker and Shea Martinez-Collinsworth will run in the 800-meter trial events starting Friday. Walker recently finished third in the men's 800 meters at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Martinez-Collinsworth did the same in the women's 800 meters, setting a personal record time.

Eyestone believes Walker, who won a gold medal at the 2015 World University Games in China, has a shot at shocking the field and qualifying for the Rio de Janeiro Games.

The key for Walker going into the Olympic Trials, Eyestone said, is quickly recovering from the rigors of the NCAA Championship race and entire season as a whole. Walker entered as the No. 1 seed in the 800-meter event the NCAA Championships, but finished third with a time of 1:45.17. Any other year, Eyestone said, that's a time deserving of a victory.

"[It's] just believing that he's capable of putting it together," Eyestone said. "He was sixth at the USA's last year, which was essentially the same meet as the Olympic Trials. … If he can improve on that, and battle into the next few spots, he'll be in the top three. Then he'll be bound for Rio, as well."

Martinez-Collinsworth, a product of Davis High, took over a half-second off her personal record at the NCAA Championships. The 800-meter time of 2:02.83 now ranks as the third-best 800-meter run in BYU track & field history.

"She's had a really remarkable season," Eyestone said. "She's demonstrated that she has great 400-meter speed. She's going to have to drop her [personal record] a couple of seconds going into the meet, but if she can do that, sometimes at the end of the season, you're just kind of riding a high and things continue to go well. That was a great accomplishment for her and hopefully she can battle her way into the final."

BYU junior high jumper Zach Blackham has also qualified for the Olympic Trials. The Orem High product will compete against the nation's best on Friday, July 8. Southern Utah senior Jayson Kovar is also registered for the men's discus throw.

Kovar was named a second-team All-American after finishing ninth at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene three weeks ago.
