New York • Stocks are edging broadly higher in early trading, led by gains in telecom companies, banks and technology.

Apple rose about 1 percent in the first few minutes of trading Wednesday, the biggest gain in the Dow Jones industrial average.

FedEx fell 4 percent after giving a forecast late Tuesday that disappointed investors.

At 7:45 a.m. Mountain time, the Dow rose 47 points, or 0.3 percent, to 17,878. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 4 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,093. The Nasdaq composite climbed 6 points, or 0.1 percent, to 4,849.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell to 1.70 percent.
