A 68-year-old man's leg was severed in a lawn-mowing accident Friday, Tooele County police said.

The man was cutting grass Friday evening in Erda, riding a tractor with a lawn-mowing attachment near 1200 East and Erda Way when the equipment got caught on a fence, said Tooele County Sgt. Eric McCollum.

The man came down from the tractor to free the equipment from the fence, McCollum said, but a piece of the machine was still spinning and his right pant leg was caught in the machine.

The machine whipped the man around, severing his right leg below the knee, according to McCollum.

Crews responded to a 911 call about 9 p.m. Luckily, McCollum said, there was minimal bleeding and the man was coherent and talking to paramedics at the scene.

A helicopter took him to a Salt Lake Valley hospital in "very serious" condition, McCollum said.
