Provo • Suddenly, BYU's basketball program is a bit thin at the guard line.
Redshirt freshman guard Jordan Chatman, who graduated in April despite only two years at BYU, announced that he is transferring out of the program.
Chatman, a 6-foot-5 guard who is the son of former BYU great Jeff Chatman, has three years of eligibility remaining.
Coincidentally, Jeff Chatman tweeted earlier Thursday that his son had been accepted into BYU's law school.
It is not clear to which school Jordan Chatman will transfer.
The shooting guard from Vancouver, Wash., averaged 2.6 points and 1.0 rebounds per game last season as BYU went 26-11 and made it to the NIT semifinals. He averaged about 10 minutes per game, and likely would have seen his minutes decrease next season due to an influx of talent at his position.
Chatman served a two-year mission to Taipei, Taiwan, before enrolling at BYU and redshirted in 2014-15 to recover from an injury.
He graduated with a degree in Asian Studies (China emphasis).
"Jordan is a great student-athlete," said coach Dave Rose. "We're proud of what he achieved on and off the court. We wish him and his family the very best."
Chatman was one of the better on-ball defenders on the squad last year, but was inconsistent offensively. He was 18 of 53 from 3-point range.
"I would like to thank coach Rose for the opportunity to play at BYU," he said in a school news release. "I wish the best for him, his staff and my former teammates in the future."
