A prosecutor with the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office died Monday morning after committing suicide in a long fall in downtown Salt Lake City, police said Tuesday.

Salt Lake City police Detective Greg Wilking confirmed the victim was Chad Platt, and that "it was a suicide," due to a "fall from height."

Platt's death was believed to have occurred at about 5:30 a.m. Monday, Wilking said.

Police said his body was found near the street at 81 E. 300 South, below a parking tower, and near where the DA's offices are located.

DA Sim Gill on Tuesday called Platt "a valued colleague."

"... We were heartbroken to learn of his death," Gill said. "Our thoughts are with his family at this time."

Gill declined to say more about details of Platt's demise. Platt, 46, attended the University of Utah and was admitted to the Bar in 1999, according to the Utah Bar's directory. Suicide can be prevented •
