Orem • The Mountain View Bruins used an inspired second half to topple the top-ranked Provo Bulldogs 3-1 on Tuesday.

Mountain View sophomore forward Jackson McBride recorded a goal and an assist to help his team take the top spot in Region 7, as well as hand Provo its first region loss of the season.

"I'm psyched," McBride said. "It was a great game against the number one team in the region. This is our start to state."

McBride aided in the game's first goal when his shot from the corner of the box was mishandled by Provo goalkeeper Gabriel Higginbotham and tapped in by Mountain View's Cristobal Zamorano in the 45th minute.

Then in the 53rd minute, Bruins freshman forward Ben Ortiz played a ball toward the far post, where McBride was able to chase it down and chip it into the top netting for a 2-0 advantage.

"When I saw it rolling over, I sprinted my guts out," McBride said. "I just went to tap it in, but I hit it harder than I meant to. But once I saw it go in, I went crazy."

In the 62nd minute with the Provo defense scrambling, Mountain View senior midfielder Irvin Valencia curled in a shot past the outstretched arm of Higginbotham and into the far post.

Provo would avoid a shutout by earning a penalty kick in the 79th minute which was put away by senior forward Jonathan Ruvalcaba.

"We played solid defense all game, which is uncharacteristic of us unfortunately," Bruins coach Jace Green said. "We'll go through spurts where we have rough defensive breakdowns, but we played solid the whole game."

Mountain View's win sets up an interesting finish to Region 7. The Bruins are one point ahead of Provo in the region standings. but have two more games to play including one against third-place Alta. The Bruins have gone on a six-game unbeaten streak since a loss at Provo on April 1.

"We were organized, we kept [Provo] wide, we did everything we had been working on," Green added "I think things opened up for us after the first goal … they want to pack everything into the middle so I wanted to utilize the space wide and attack from the outside in."

The Bulldogs have three games remaining with Timpview on Friday. Even with the loss, Provo head coach Cesar Cardoso knows his squad still has the opportunity to win another region championship.

"This was one game," Cardoso said. "We just need to do our job, win all three games and we're still region champions. We're going to take it one game at a time, prepare better for our game on Friday and keep going. It's a big job to do, but we can do it."
