American Preparatory Academy's first opportunity to play in the postseason in any sport ended with a 5-0 loss to Layton Christian on Wednesday.

Although APA was the higher seed, the older and more experienced Eagles controlled play in the shutout.

"We have a very young team. Most of our players are ninth- and tenth-graders," American Prep coach Quintin Nethercott said.

Layton Christian (11-3), which will play at Manti on Saturday, struck first on a goal by Serge Twagirayezu in the 12th minute. The lead went to 2-0 in the 28th minute when a strike by Fabrizio Tufano was inadvertently sent into the net by an American Prep (9-5) defender.

Before halftime, Layton's Christians Gutierrez's rebound of his own shot went by American Prep keeper Guenaro Nolazco for a 3-0 advantage.

In the second half, Calvin Karangwa scored a hat trick for the Eagles.

Layton Christian coach Chris Tatro, who has led the team for over a decade, estimated roster turnover year-to-year is about 50 percent.

"This team is unique because, for a lot of them, this is the first year for them playing together," Tatro said. "The majority of them are foreign exchange students from all over the world. We've got Venezuela, Rwanda, Spain; you name it. ... Our struggles at the beginning is to play well as a team. Today, we played like the team that we can be."
