Drivers should expect delays on Interstate 215 beginning Tuesday night as the Utah Department of Transportation begins a major project to reconstruct the freeway between State Road 201 and 4700 South.

UDOT said it expects to keep all lanes open during peak drive times, but they will be narrowed and shifted from time to time — which can lead to delays. Speed limits will also be lowered to 60 mph in construction areas.

Besides reconstructing concrete pavement, the project will add auxiliary lanes at the SR-201, 3500 South and 4700 South interchanges to make it easier for drivers to get on and off the freeway. Crews also will reconstruct the I-215 bridges over SR-201.

Another aspect of the project will repave westbound lanes between Redwood Road and 300 East. Eastbound lanes in that stretch were repaved last year.

The work is scheduled for completion in fall 2017. Drivers should expect nighttime and weekend lane restrictions throughout the project, UDOT said.
