A SWAT standoff that began after an alleged kidnapping in west Salt Lake City ended Monday afternoon with seven people in custody, including a man who only surrendered after multiple tear gas canisters were fired into the home where he was barricaded.

On Monday morning, a woman fled the home, at 400 S. 940 West, and went to nearby Franklin Elementary School, where she reported the kidnapping, said Salt Lake City police Detective Greg Wilking.

Officers cordoned off the area around the home about 9:30 a.m., Wilking said.

SWAT officers attempted to negotiate the occupants' surrender, but finally fired several tear gas canisters into the home at 12:40 p.m. Six people were arrested shortly thereafter, but one man remained inside.

Shortly before 1 p.m., two more gas canisters were fired into the home, and a few minutes later, Wilking reported that the SWAT negotiator had, finally, made contact with the male suspect. By 1:10 p.m., the man — whose identity was not immediately released — walked out and surrendered.

SWAT officers entered the home and made sure no one else was inside.

A 34-year-old man was booked into Salt Lake County jail on outstanding warrants and suspicion of rape, according to police.

Franklin Elementary School was placed in lockdown during the standoff.
