Firefighters from three agencies battled a blaze at an industrial warehouse Monday.

The warehouse is located near 7200 W. 2100 South, near the border between Salt Lake City and Magna. At about 7:35 p.m., Unified Police Department officers saw a small fire at the building, which led to an explosion, said Salt Lake City Fire Capt. Mark Bednarik.

The fire "grew in intensity" from there, and when firefighters arrived, they found the building engulfed in flames, Bednarik said.

A UDOT traffic camera showed a large cloud of black smoke rising from flames.

About 55 firefighters from three agencies doused the flames from outside the building. Firefighters from West Valley City and the Unified Fire Authority joined Salt Lake City's in the battle against the blaze, which they extinguished after 8 p.m.

Westbound State Route 201 was temporarily closed from 5600 West to 8400 West for the firefighters.

The building was last used by a construction company, but had been condemned, Bednarik said. Now the property owners use the space around the building for storage; they told firefighters that there might have been propane in the area, the captain added.

The property owners also told firefighters that the building did not have power or gas. Investigators are looking into how the fire started.

Firefighters estimated the damage at $500,000.
