A former campaign consultant for Utah Sen. Mike Lee will serve as the new president of the conservative Sutherland Institute, replacing a leader asked to step down two years ago amid disagreements about the organization's future.
The Utah think tank announced Thursday that Boyd Matheson has been selected as president after a nationwide search. He is expected to assume his new post early next month.
Matheson replaces Paul Mero, who was asked by the board to leave after serving as head of the Sutherland Institute for 14 years. An interim president has led the group in the meantime.
The institute was founded in 1995 by wealthy investment manager Gaylord Swim. It is named for George Sutherland, a U.S. Supreme Court justice from Utah, who fought government expansion in the 1930s.
