A climber died Wednesday afternoon after falling from a cliff in Zion National Park.
The climber fell from near the top of Moonlight Buttress, said park spokesman David Eaker. The 1,200-foot route in Zion Canyon requires ropes and harnesses. Other climbers, who were not associated with the man, saw him fall about 12:30 p.m., according to a statement by park staff. Rangers found the man's body at the base of the route. He had died at the scene.
His name is being withheld pending family notification.
Rangers are investigating how the man fell, Eaker said. He appeared to have been climbing alone, Eaker said.
Park Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh called the death "a very sad situation."
"Our condolences go out to the individual's friends and family," Bradybaugh said.
