Logan • Two teams playing some of the best basketball in the Mountain West Conference close the regular season Saturday night at the Spectrum.

Fresno State, which has won five straight games, visits Utah State, which has won four of its past six — all by at least eight points.

While the Bulldogs have their eye on the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Mountain West Conference tournament, the Aggies can finish seventh with a victory.

As the No. 7 seed, Utah State would play Air Force, which it swept during the season, in the first round. The Aggies would also be on the opposite side of the bracket than regular-season champion San Diego State.

If Utah State loses to Fresno State, however, it will be the No. 8 or 9 seed. The Aggies could play Wyoming in the first round — the Cowboys beat them by 19 during the season — before a potential quarterfinal round meeting with San Diego State.

Coach Tim Duryea says the Aggies have to win the conference tourney to prolong their season.

They won't have a strong enough résumé to be selected for the NIT, and Utah State apparently has no interest in participating in any of the secondary postseason tournaments.

"We know we've got to win our conference tournament," Duryea said, "or our season is over."

Utah State is 15-13 overall and 7-10 in the Mountain West. A victory over Fresno State clinches its 23rd straight winning season, going back to 1992-93.

Beating the Bulldogs won't be easy. Fresno is 21-9 overall and 12-5 in the Mountain West. Two weeks ago, the Bulldogs scored a 75-68 victory over Utah State at the Save Mart Center. Senior guard Marvelle Harris scored 22 points and the Bulldogs limited the Aggies to 6-for-22 shooting from the 3-point line.

"Fresno State is a physically talented group," Duryea said. "They are athletic — one through five — and can really cause you problems. They do a good job on the offensive boards and Marvelle is probably the Player of the Year in the league. He puts a lot of pressure on your defense."

Three Utah State seniors will play their final home game against the Bulldogs. The group includes point guard Darius Perkins, shooting guard Chris Smith and wing Trace Cureton. Senior Grayson Moore won't play because of a broken foot.

Perkins and Smith, who transferred to Utah State from junior college, will make their 60th consecutive starts for the Aggies.

"Darius never played point guard before he got here," Duryea said. "He has sacrificed a lot in terms of his own game for the good of the program."

Smith is Utah State's top scorer. He averages 15.1 points per game.

"We've relied heavily on [Smith] since he's been here," Duryea said. "… Chris is one of the more talented two-guards in the league."

Cureton, another junior college transfer, has played sparingly for the Aggies. But he will make his first career start against Fresno.

"He's a very bright guy — very intelligent," Duryea said. "He's a very good teammate who will be a success in life."
