A man who was shot by Salt Lake City police has been indicted in federal court.

On Wednesday, a federal grand jury indicted Palm Samiuela Lautaimi, 28, with two counts of felon in possession of a firearm, one count of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute and one count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

All but one of the counts stem from a traffic stop in West Valley City on Jan. 16; one of the felon-in-possession-of-a-firearm counts is related to a Jan. 31 police shooting.

On Jan. 16, a jail report says a West Valley City officer stopped Lautaimi because a check on a license plate showed the silver sedan he was driving was not insured. According to the report, a loaded .22-caliber handgun and 10 "twist baggies" of methamphetamine were allegedly found on Lautaimi.

He was arrested, which could have put Lautaimi back in prison almost immediately, until a parole violation hearing was held. But no one from Adult Probation and Parole came to pick up Lautaimi because it was the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, according to a Salt Lake County jail report. He was released because no charges had been filed.

On Jan. 31, two police officers tried to stop Lautaimi, who was on foot at about 1340 South Main, to talk to him about an undisclosed matter. He allegedly "became violent" and ran, with the officers in pursuit; shots were fired a short time later.

Lautaimi, wounded, was hospitalized to treat his injuries from the shooting.

Salt Lake City police Sgt. Robin Heiden said Lautaimi had a gun in his hand, but he declined to disclose more information earlier this month.

Utah Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Adams said earlier this month that her agency is reviewing its supervision of Lautaimi and information about his arrest.

Lautaimi's two counts of felon in possession of a firearm each carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The methamphetamine count carries a maximum penalty of 20 years.

His count of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime has a mandatory five-year-minimum sentence that has to be served consecutive to any other sentence.
