Scott Jones, one of three associate superintendents at the Utah State Office of Education, will leave his post at the end of February, the state school board announced Tuesday.

Jones was named associate superintendent for business and operations last May, taking over the position after two senior education managers were fired. In a prepared statement, Jones said he resigned in order to accept a position with the National Nuclear Security Administration and continue his career in the Army Reserve.

"I sincerely appreciate the opportunity I have had to serve," Jones said. "Our educators and their leaders are extraordinary individuals. I am honored that I was a part of such a great organization serving the very best in education."

Prior to joining the State Office of Education, Jones worked as interim director of the Utah State Office of Rehabilitation and finance director of the Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind.

His tenure as associate superintendent is credited by the state school board with strengthening financial accountability and reducing the risk of fraud, waste and abuse.

"I have a great deal of respect for Scott and the work he has performed at USDB, USOR, and USOE," school board Chairman David Crandall said in a prepared statement. "Each organization has been improved because of his expertise and leadership."

In addition to Jones' resignation, State Superintendent Brad Smith announced a medical leave from the State Office of Education in January. Smith's deputy, Syd Dickson, was named acting state superintendent, and Smith is expected to return to his post in April.
